Synopsis
Osaka's skyline vanishes behind a wall of flame. Inferno Drake, a winged kaiju with scales resistant to every known munition, is performing slow, contemptuous circles over the city while breathing fire onto expressways below.
Fighter jets approach. The kaiju bats them aside with a wingtip. The pilots eject. One of them, descending by parachute, notices a rooster ascending past him, going the other direction.
Key Moments
The Aerial Duel
The episode's centerpiece is a sustained aerial battle shot from multiple angles — ground level, cockpit perspective, and what appears to be a news helicopter that keeps accidentally capturing the fight. The news anchor's increasingly baffled commentary runs as background audio throughout.
Fire Immunity (Sort Of)
Rooster is briefly engulfed in flames during a dive. He lands, looks at himself, and appears mildly annoyed. The mechanism is never explained. Scientists in a basement lab update their spreadsheet.
The Finishing Move
Rooster lands on the kaiju's back between its wings, grabs both wings simultaneously, and folds them closed while the kaiju is at altitude. They fall together. Only Rooster walks away from the crater.
Episode Notes
- Runtime: ~24 minutes
- The news anchor subplot runs as a recurring bit for the rest of the season
- This episode confirms Rooster's flight capability is sustained, not just jumping
- Inferno Drake's wingspan of ~2km makes it the largest kaiju of Season 1
Reception
Episode 3 expanded the show's visual vocabulary beyond ground combat and was praised for its aerial cinematography. The news anchor gag was cited by multiple reviewers as the season's best running joke.
